《联合早报》专访投资大师罗杰斯 罗杰斯看好华文潜力

国际著名的投资家和金融学教授吉姆•罗杰斯(Jim Rogers)，是一位曾被时代杂志称其为金融界的印地安那•琼斯（the Indiana Jones of finance），还被“股神”巴菲特称为“对大势的把握无人能及”的投资大师。

罗杰斯深信中国将是21世纪最重要的国家，为了要让女儿能讲流利华语，拥有深厚的中华文化底蕴，他选定新加坡。
他说：“新加坡的南洋幼稚园和南洋小学是吸引我选择在新加坡定居的最主要原因。新加坡空气清新、学校教华文、医疗卫生好，对我和妻子来说，是一个完美的城市。”
去年6月，他去南洋小学听王梅凤校长主持的小一报名讲座，就认定了这是女儿的学校。
他说：“我是家长群里，唯一的'红毛'人。王校长介绍这所重视华文，强调纪律，培养学生向上向善品德教育的学校，感动了我。但是，我和妻子跟学校完全没有关系，怎样才能进校呢？我不断去和王校长谈话，幸好找到了家长义工这条路，我们总算能通过为学校服务，争取孩子入学的机会。我的妻子佩琦，可以为学校做一两百个小时义工。她是'红毛人'，英文是母语，可以为学校的英文课程贡献力量。”
当了家长义工，还要确保女儿属于不需要抽签的“包进”者，罗杰斯必须住在学校方圆一公里内。他已经在南洋小学附近找房子。

教育部规定必须有新加坡永久居民的身份，才能当家长义工，罗杰斯说：“早在两年前，我已经是新加坡永久居民了。”
罗杰斯通过南洋幼稚园校董的介绍，去年9月先把4岁的乐乐，送进南洋幼稚园。
在选定新加坡南洋幼稚园之前，罗杰斯看了很多学校，上海的宋庆龄幼稚园当然没有错过。
他说：“我们还是认为南洋幼稚园更好，孩子三岁四岁，全教华文、讲华语；五岁六岁，华文和英文各占一半，这样的教育最好。很多人认为南洋学校功课很难，华文很深，学校管得很严。对我来说，这正是我选择要进南洋的原因。我和妻子都想孩子在一所有高要求的学校长大，我们希望她们能在那里把华文学好，接受传统中华文化的熏陶，守纪律，为将来做好准备。”

“很多人选择到新加坡来是基于政府许多优惠政策，我不是。我来的原因很简单，就是这了这两所学校。今年妻子临盆生产，我们也没有回去美国。”
罗杰斯认为搬到亚洲来，选择新加坡，到南洋幼稚园读书，是对女儿最好的投资。“她继续住在纽约，只会讲英语，对世界发展一无所知，在有生之年，不能掌握华文，那对她是莫大损失。”

南洋幼稚园现有学生400人。很多家长是怀孕了，立刻打电话到学校报名，一般都在孩子入学三年前就报名。之后才报名的，入学机会很渺茫。

他说:“为了学好华文,我们不能选东京。过去三年,我们每年的暑假都到新加坡、上海和香港去。上海虽然很好,不能考虑的是那里的空气不好,在那里我不能呼吸,我也不能让两个女儿在那里呼吸。新加坡的南洋幼稚园和南洋小学则是吸引我选择在新加坡定居的最主要原因,对我和妻子来说,新加坡是一个完美的城市。”

那天到南洋小学访问王梅凤校长谈小一报名，要了解和学校没有关系的家长为了争取孩子能优先在2B期报名，纷纷到学校当义工的疯劲。
她说，最记得一位担任银行董事的芬兰人，为了让孩子入校学华文，争取在2B期报名，除了挪出时间，穿着笔挺西装，在学校操场维持学生秩序，还千辛万苦在2B期报名那天，匆忙地把新加坡永久居民权证书拿给她看，表示有资格报名。
之后，王梅凤谈到罗杰斯。她说："这位世界级投资家告诉我，他走遍世界，选择定居新加坡，是因为南洋小学。让我联系他一下，你可以访问他。"

理事会昨天在讲华语运动开幕式上首次播放由几名洋人和黑人小孩说华语的有趣画面。其中一名小孩正是国际知名的美国投资家罗杰斯（Jim Rogers）年仅五岁、乳名为“快乐”的女儿。
“快乐”的母亲佩姬（Paige Parker）受访时透露，她家中有一名来自中国的家庭教师常住，每天都在教导“快乐”学习华语及其他与中国相关的知识，至今持续了五年，“快乐”也因此能说得一口标准华语。
目前就读于南洋幼稚园的“快乐”经人介绍，成了被推广华语理事会从约100名小孩中选出来拍摄宣传短片的八名“讲华语大使”之一。
为进一步让“快乐”有个良好的华文学习环境，佩姬直言他们家上个月已搬到南洋小学附近，并希望这对她明年报名入读这所名校有帮助。
询及夫妇俩坚决要让女儿学好华文的原因，本身也已学了三年华文的佩姬表示他们都相信在女儿有生之年，必定会见到中国崛起这个重要发展。因此，他们决定趁女儿学习能力非常强的时候，把华文当成能让女儿一生受用的“礼物”献给她们。

罗杰斯（Jim Rogers，67岁）是投资界传奇人物，有“华尔街金童”、“华尔街的印第安那琼斯”称号。1942年生于美国阿拉巴马州。5岁在棒球场捡空罐子，做第一笔生意赚钱。长大后获奖学金上耶鲁大学，毕业后到英国牛津大学深造。曾在美国陆军服役，退役后进入华尔街工作。1970年他和索罗斯共同创立全球闻名的量子基金（Quantum Fund），10年内赚够一生花用的财富（获利超过40倍），37岁退休。退休后两次环游世界，继续经营管理自己的投资并兼任哥伦比亚大学教授。57岁结婚，60岁和65岁两名女儿出生，64岁定居新加坡。

新加坡的教育，素来以严格、有纪律、高要求著称，近年来却有逐渐宽松的迹象。罗杰斯希望新加坡教育部千万不要学西方，受西方影响。
罗杰斯说：“西方国家在败落中，新加坡千万不要向他们学习。现在，西方国家是世界最大的债务国，亚洲国家是世界最大的债权国。我们要向在兴盛中的国家学习，不要向在败落中的国家学习。”
罗杰斯的女儿快乐上个月开始是南洋小学一年级学生。每天早上，他们夫妻俩带着小女儿小蜜蜂（Beeland Anderson Parker Rogers，小名Baby Bee）合家送快乐上学。虽然只上了一个月课，一家大小对南小非常满意。快乐对学校尤其赞不绝口。
她说：“到新加坡来读的南洋幼稚园和南洋小学我都喜欢，不过我更喜欢南洋小学，南小简直好极了。”
罗杰斯说：“快乐最喜欢老师对她严格，对她要求高，要她守纪律，这也是我们喜欢的，是美国学校所做不到的。很多新加坡朋友对我们喜欢这里严格的教育感到不可思议，他们说，正是这样的教育制度叫他们吃不消而想移民。其实，美国教育不够好，这已经不是秘密。”
为了让女儿在讲华语的环境成长，2007年6月他带着妻小离开纽约，定居新加坡。他认为这项选择是明智的。为了让快乐能“包进”南洋小学，夫妻俩除了在学校做了近100小时义工，还在距离南小不到1公里处买了房子。
他说：“为了找个讲华语和适合居住的最好环境，我们必须考虑亚洲华人聚居的城市。快乐出生后的几年暑假，我们每年分头在上海、香港、台北和新加坡住过，最终选择新加坡是经过调查研究的。来了两年半，我们对新加坡的生活很满意，至今没有任何需要离开的理由，我们希望能在这里住下去，越久越好。
“快乐在南小的课外活动选了华族舞蹈、华文戏剧课，还有体操课，教练从中国来，很严格，很好。”

谈起移民新加坡，他说：“好极了，新加坡绝对是个明智的选择，我们对生活在新加坡满意到了极点。”
今年1月，快乐进了南洋小学读书，罗家就开始了每天“合家漫步上学”的有规律生涯。
罗杰斯说：“每天早上6时，我们合家起身、换衣服、吃早餐，四个人一起出门，漫步上学。我们家离开南小很近，15分钟就走到。这段合家漫步的时间很重要，我们无所不谈，感到很愉快、舒服。中午1时，小女儿在睡觉，我和妻子佩琦两人去接快乐。回家沿途，快乐告诉我们学校发生的事情，大家都很高兴。下午，在家的华文老师和快乐一起做功课，读华文故事书给她听。傍晚5时吃过晚饭，是我读书给两个孩子听的时候。从孩子出生第一天，我和佩琦就开始朗读书本给她们听的工作，到现在已经养成了孩子爱书的习惯。现在两岁不到的小女儿，每天一睁开眼睛，就对我说‘books’，要我读书。我们家没有电视机，读书的时间很多。”

羅傑斯的下一個預言，是中國。他新近又整理了一本口述的書《中國很牛》，這本書不像他的《熱門商品》嚴謹整理各方數據，但相等宏觀地看到了世界發展的未來趨勢。他說21世紀是中國的世紀，19世紀屬於英國人，20世紀美國崛起，苦難了數百年後中國將在21世紀崛起，並成為地球上最有影響力的國家。問他通膨對中國的影響？羅傑斯不像一般經濟學家那麼囉嗦，他提出煤是今日石油唯一可行的替代物，中國產煤自給自足，能源需求一半以上可依賴煤；因此當全球為高油價所苦時，中國將開採更多的煤，尤其發展液化煤的技術使其脫離污染。中國可能因其他國家經濟通膨停滯，反躍升全球經濟最強盛的國家。
羅傑斯當年與索羅斯共創量子基金，報酬率嚇死人，高達4000％。我想他應該是位美裔猶太人吧，如今他卻把家移至新加坡，亞洲最靠近中國城市之一。問他為什麼不是上海、北京或香港？他說中國污染太嚴重，香港說廣東話又習用繁體字，他直言那是一種即將「絕種」的文字。他的兩個女兒當然都是白皮膚、黃頭髮，每日讀中文書習了一口京片子，寫簡體中文。他鼓勵女兒的方法，也很「商品」，「妳們長大後將成最具競爭力的人類！」

Like many Singapore parents, they have become parent volunteers so that their five-year-old daughter can stand a better chance of getting into Nanyang Primary School.

Ms Parker says they agreed Nanyang Primary in Bukit Timah was the ideal school for Happy when they attended a talk given by its principal, Madam Heng Boey Hong, last year.
'She's such a dynamo. She talked about the discipline and the emphasis on Chinese and I said 'Jim, this is where we need to be. This is exactly what we want for Happy',' she recalls.

Well, we would like to move to China, but the air is so terrible, the pollution is so bad, that we can't bring ourselves to do it. Everything works in Singapore. It's an astonishing place. It's got the best education system in the world. It's got the best health care in the world. And it's Chinese-speaking. Our 4-year-old daughter, Happy, goes to a school where they only speak Chinese. One of our motivations was that she continue to speak Chinese. It may not be as exciting as Shanghai or New York, but it's exciting enough for me.

My daughter is 4-and-a-half. She has two native languages. One is Mandarin. When she was born, we got a Chinese nanny from China who moved in with us, and I told her you only speak Mandarin to her. She speaks Chinese like a native. We've moved to Singapore to insure that it continues. We're having another daughter in March, and she'll be brought up the same way. There are 1.5 billion people who speak Chinese every day. That most Americans are monolingual I see as a bad situation.

In Sep. 2007, Rogers sold his mansion in New York City for about 15 million USD and moved to Singapore. This is due mainly in his belief that this is a ground-breaking time for investment potential in Asian markets. Rogers' daughter is being tutored in Mandarin to prepare her for the future, he says. "Moving to Singapore and Dubai now is like moving to New York City in 1908," he said. Also, he is quoted to say: "If you were smart in 1807 you moved to London, if you were smart in 1907 you moved to New York City, and if you are smart in 2007 you move to Asia." In an CNBC interview with Maria Bartiromo broadcast on May 5, 2008, Rogers said that people in Asia are extremely motivated and driven, and he wants to be in that type of environment to be himself motivated and driven. He said during that interview that, this is how America and Europe used to be. He chose not to move to Hong Kong or Shanghai due to the high levels of pollution causing potential health problems for his daughter.

Why Singapore
Many expats who choose to relocate here are asked, “Why Singapore?” In the case of PAIGE PARKER and her financier husband Jim Rogers, a more pertinent question is, “Why Mandarin?”

Once on the ground here, we visited school after school and asked locals to recommend the one that was “most Chinese”. We were surprised to find only bilingual schools, as we had assumed that we could find an all-Chinese curriculum here. Folks told us repeatedly of Nanyang Primary School, so we attended a Primary 1 registration meeting – three years early!
Principal Madame Heng wowed us with her intelligence, commitment to discipline, and incorporation of Chinese culture into the curriculum. Still, she suggested we look at other schools, “since getting into Nanyang is terribly difficult”. From her I learned about becoming a parent volunteer, and now I work with Nanyang’s English department and the Reading Mums programme hoping to improve Happy’s odds of entering in 2010.
To be safe, since parent volunteers’ children are not guaranteed acceptance, we are moving to within one kilometre of the kindergarten. When applications are high, then those within the closest proximity are considered first. This means that we are leaving the Orchard Road area, where we enjoy walking to most places, for an address that the government confirmed is within a kilometre of Nanyang Primary. Oh, what we do for our children!

Full-page feature on Jim Rogers, a legendary investor who moved to Singapore three years ago, noted how he and his family were spending Chinese New Year in Singapore.
zbNOW noted that Jim’s daughter had enrolled in Nanyang Primary and was enjoying her classes and CCAs in Chinese dance and drama. zbNOW added that Jim and his wife had done close to 100 hours of volunteer work and bought a house near Nanyang Primary in order to be “guaranteed” a place in the school.
