FAQ on Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda's health
Q: What is wrong with Ven. Chief?
A: Bhante recently had a mild stroke and this has impaired his ability to swallow food and fluids properly as well as his speech. Due to his age and long illness of diabetes, complications have come about. Bhante is currently 87 years old.
Q: Is Bhante's condition serious?
A: Fluids that are ingested by Bhante at times goes into the lungs and this causes an infection in the lungs resulting in cough, phlegm and fever. Therefore it is serious. Doctors have however assured us that they are evaluating various options to overcome this medical problem. Currently they have resorted to a nose tube for feeding.
Q: Is Bhante immobilised?
A: No, Bhante has been going for his physical exercises with the assistance of an attending monk and also to the toilet. However, due to his diabetes, this has affected his nervous system and he is unable to walk properly. A physiotherapist has been working with the Ven Chief and he has shown determination to walk by himself.
Q: Can I visit the Venerable Chief?
A: It would be greatly appreciated if hospital visits and the duration of visits are LIMITED as our Chief needs all the rest he can get. Despite a clear notice on RESTRICTED VISITS, many well meaning devotees and Venerables have gone to the hospital while some have even gone to the extent of administering massage, giving him ginseng, vitamins, health supplements, herbal soups etc clearly against the advice of the doctors and many a time defying the monks in attendance.
We are aware our devotees mean well but this practice has to STOP as such will disrupt the mainstream mediation our Chief is on and this is going to prove the medication ineffective. Most herbs, we have been informed are steroid based and it works against the mainstream medication if taken together. So, if you really care for the Venerable Chief please adhere strictly to our plea to refrain from visiting him. We at the Vihara will update you constantly.
Q: How can I help Bhante?
A: Have Bhante in your prayers, always radiate Metta and conduct Bodhi pujas. The Vihara is currently having a daily Bodhi puja for Bhante's recovery.
In his CD titled "Sharing of Merits" the Venerable Chief recalled the efficacy of the protection of Devas. Bhante shared on various occasions where Devas have protected devotees and also himself giving life examples. Secondly, it has been Bhante's passion to keep on giving Dhamma talks and authoring simple booklets and books on the Dhamma. We should therefore contribute seriously towards the Dhammadutta work in the fields which Bhante is so passionate about. The merits accrued thereafter should be recollected daily and focused in your radiation of loving kindness and invoking the power of the Dhamma protectors towards
Bhante’s recovery.
Q: How else can I help?
A: There are many ways you can help either at the Vihara, your neighborhood Buddhist society or at a nearby Buddhist center. At the Sunday School you could teach children Dhamma, assist in preparation of refreshments for the children, preparation of Dana, help to transport Dhamma books to the various Buddhist centres or arrange and replenish the books at the free counter,help in the preparation of offerings for the Puja, etc.
You can also help to raise funds for worthy causes and for Buddhist societies. You can pass Dhamma books to your office colleagues, relatives and friends and in your neighborhood. If you are good in administrative work, you could join the Buddhist society or Sunday school committee. Help translate some of Bhante's booklets into other languages or network with those who could. Volunteer to edit booklets for publications. All these and other selfless work are meritorious deeds.
In his CD, “Buddhist concept of Heaven and Hell”, Bhante lamented:

Muslims would say the Quran said this..
But Buddhists would say… he (a speaker) said this…
Let us also equip ourselves to be able to quote from the Suttas too instead of saying he or she said this…
BHANTE WOULD BE MOST HAPPY TO HEAR THAT HIS YEARS OF DHAMMADUTTA WORK WERE NOT IN VAIN IF YOU CONTINUE TO BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED WHERE HIS PASSION LIES, ie. THE SUNDAY SCHOOL, DHAMMA TALKS, FREE PUBLICATIONS ETC.

Dear Friends of the Vihara,
1. Ven. Chief was moved today to Room 6009, Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
2. Ven Chief is much stronger, he is able to speak clearer. He had an extremely good sleep over the period he arrived in S'pore. He had apparently complained that he was missing the routine of having his milk and medicine as is usually done in the wee hours of the morning in SJMC. In fact he was unaware that he was already fed the milk and medicine while he was having a sound sleep.
3. The scan and X-rays have shown some blockage in the stomach area and the doctors are carrying out further tests. According to Dr Gordon Khoo they will not be performing any surgery on Chief Rev as yet.
4. Chief Rev. is breathing better now as they have changed his nasal tube to a thinner one. He is feeling more comfortable now and this procedure was done by Dr Dass.
5. Doctors are continuing to carry out a series of tests on his blood, urine, stools etc.
6. The neurosurgeon in attendance is Dr Tang Kok Fu.
7. A large congregation of monks have since visited Chief Rev. and recited Sutras. Bhante G from Washington D C and Ven Karunasara are also in Spore and have been keeping him company as well as chanting for his speedy recovery. Ven K Dhammaratana has extended his stay to assist our Chief Rev. and will return on Saturday.
Bhante Sumana and Bhante Sarada from Singapore have set themselves a goal. they informed that Chief Rev. will return to the BMV without the aid of a walking stick or wheel chair.
We wish to kindly remind our devotees NOT TO visit Chief Rev. for the time being but to continue with your prayers for him.

3RD UPDATE ON VEN. CHIEF’S HEALTH FROM SINGAPORE

Dear Friends of the Vihara,
1. Ven. Chief has begun to walk slowly around the room with assistance. He is game for the physical exercises for his one intention is to begin walking unaided.
2. Doctors are working on reducing his weight so that Bhante’s legs can support his weight.
3. There are 8 specialists attending to Ven Chief.
4. Bhante Sumana has been spending approximately 12 hrs daily with Ven Chief.
5. Bhante G from Washington DC has been a regular visitor spending approximately 3 hrs with Ven. Chief radiating metta.
6. Dr Gordon had a private meeting with our Bhante Dhammaratana and Bhante Sumana and had outlined the course of action. This was with all the 8 specialists in attendance. and finally

Chief sends his warmest regards and thanks all of us for our metta. He is with our assistance fighting to get better. The monks in attendance say that Ven. Chief is giving his ALL to get better.
To this, we say “SADHU SADHU SADHU "

We would also like to record that Bhante Sarada of Spore has been instrumental in coordinating the medical needs of our Venerable Chief?since he was admitted to Mt Elizabeth Hospital in Spore. Bhante Sarada along with Bhante Sumana have also looked into the daily requirements and travel arrangements of the 3 monks and the lay-attendant assigned to take care of Ven. Chief.
We would also like to record that Bhante Sarada makes it a point to be at the hospital promptly at 8am daily and he stays throughout the day to attend to Ven Chief. The same goes with Bhante Sumana. The Sasana Society is truly grateful and fully appreciates all the efforts accorded by Bhante Sarada and Bhante Sumana in working towards the full recovery of Venerable Chief.
We are also aware that there are other members of the Sangha who are at the hospital assisting Bhante Sarada and Bhante Sumana. To them though not mentioned by name we extend our grateful thanks and appreciation.
We need to also clarify that the premises where our monks and the lay attendant are staying, belongs to Mr Richard the President of Singapore Buddhist Mission. This generous act is done by Mr Richard in his personal capacity. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Mr Richard.

CHIEF REVEREND RETURNS TO MALAYSIA !!
Our Most Venerable Teacher, Dr K. Sri Dhammananda Nayake Maha Thera arrived safely from Singapore at KLIA at 7.50pm on 21st August 06. Bhante went to Mount Elizabeth Hospital for continued medical treatment on July 25, 2006. After almost one month in Singapore, Chief reverend requested the doctors in Singapore that he be allowed to return to Malaysia. He also requested that he be sent to Subang Jaya Medical Centre first, before returning to the Buddhist Maha Vihara later this week.
Even though, he had to endure 4 hours at Changi Airport because of a technical glitch, Chief Reverend is in good condition and in high spirits. Bhante Dhammaratana, Bhante Vijitha and a few members were at KLIA to welcome Chief Reverend and his entourage. Dr Rudy who accompanied Chief from Singapore had this to say “Chief was very alert and steady throughout.”
We appeal to all devotees to allow Chief Reverend to have his rest at Subang Jaya Medical Centre. He will be back to the Buddhist Maha Vihara later this week. Let us all radiate the Blessings of the Holy Triple Gem to our teacher so that he will recover and continue to provide us the leadership and guidance to continue for the progress of the Buddha Sasana.
The Society would like to convey our sincere appreciation and thanks to Dr Gordon Khoo, his team of doctors, nurses and all personnel who had provided for our Chief Reverend’s care while at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
We would also like to place our appreciation and thanks to Bhante W. Sarada Thera and Bhante Sumana and other members of the Sangha for providing all assistance to Chief Reverend while in Singapore.
